1. Several parts need to work together

A multipoint door uses a cylinder and handle to operate a gearbox and locking strip. The door also needs to line up with its frame. A handle that lifts while the key refuses to turn can indicate different problems, including fit or worn hardware. The symptom alone cannot establish which part should be changed.

2. Stop before applying more force

Avoid lifting the handle harder, twisting a resisting key or slamming the door. Do not remove locking components to keep an external door in use. If the door is already open, leave it in a safe position while seeking advice instead of deliberately locking it to reproduce the fault. Keep children clear of an unsecured open door.

3. Describe the pattern you have noticed

Tell us whether the handle feels loose or stiff, the key turns part-way or freely, and whether the problem has become worse over time. Mention if the door previously worked only when pushed or pulled. Share those existing observations without carrying out new forceful tests. If you are trapped inside, explain whether another safe exit is available.

4. Help identify the door safely

Give your postcode, door material and whether the affected door is currently open or closed. A visible marking on the door edge may help identify the locking strip if the door is already safely open. A private photograph can be useful, but part compatibility still needs checking. Similar-looking strips and gearboxes are not automatically interchangeable.

5. Agree repair, replacement and securing

Ask whether the quote covers opening a jammed door, correcting alignment, replacing a component or a combination of work. Confirm parts, attendance, labour and applicable tax, and how any change is authorised. Replacing a cylinder is not a universal cure for a failed multipoint mechanism. Discuss how the door will be left usable and secure once the underlying fault is addressed.
