1. Leave the fragment where it is

Do not insert another key, push tools into the keyway or put glue in the lock. Those actions can drive the fragment deeper and damage the mechanism. Avoid repeatedly turning what remains of the key. Keep the loose piece somewhere safe if you have it, and tell the locksmith whether any fragment is visibly protruding without trying to pull it yourself.

2. Explain whether the door is open or shut

Tell us whether you are inside, outside or able to use another normal exit. Say if the door can currently be secured and whether the broken key is in the outside or inside cylinder. If the door is already open, avoid closing an unreliable lock to test it. For immediate danger to life or a blocked exit during an emergency, call 999.

3. Recall what happened before the break

Was the key bent, worn or difficult to turn? Did the handle need extra pressure, or did the door scrape the frame? A key can be the part that breaks while another fault creates the strain. Describe what you noticed, including any recent change in operation. There is no need to dismantle the lock to make your enquiry useful.

4. Discuss extraction and the underlying fault

Removal depends on the fragment position, access and condition of the lock. Successful extraction does not prove that the cylinder or door is fit for continued use. Ask whether the original problem needs repair and whether replacement is recommended. If new hardware is proposed, discuss compatibility and any landlord, building or insurer specification you already know applies.

5. Confirm the full quote and next step

Provide your postcode and authority to access the property. Ask about availability and whether the estimate covers assessment, extraction, attendance, labour, parts and applicable tax. Agree how any change will be explained before work continues. Request a record of the agreed work and check that the door can be used and secured afterwards.

General guidance cannot diagnose your door remotely. If there is an immediate danger to life, call 999.
